Ancient and Modern Egypt in Our World

A highly provocative exciting course, which continues on from the New Kingdom. Exploring the height of Egyptian power in foreign lands within the Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. The course also discusses the decline of Egypt, under foreign rule of the Libyans, Kushites, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Eastern Empire, First Arab invasion and the Second Arab invasion. The Second part of this course investigates the 1798 French expedition to Egypt and Egypt’s inclusion within the British Empire and Egypt’s final independence under Nasa. The course will also examine how Egyptian heritage objects have been traded as booty, by non Egyptians and how they are currently protected under international law.
Archaeological sites which we will investigate are: Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, The Mortuary temples of Thebes and the Tombs of the Nobles.
An examination of the achievements of the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth dynasty Kings of the New Kingdom. And the temples and tombs which they built, including the relationship which these structures had, with the past Egyptian landscape.
The course will investigate the development of the ancient Egyptian religion including; ‘What is in the nether world’, ‘The book of gates’ and ‘The book of caverns’. The underworld texts and ‘The book of the dead’.
Egypt provided a vital resource for many foreign rulers of the Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. The course will examine Egypt’s role in these world politics, of that time.
The first scientific survey was conducted by the French in 1798 and continued by several foreign missions. The course will discuss the heritage issues surrounding the trading of heritage objects and the pioneering Egyptologists who attempted to preserve Egypt’s heritage.
The course will examine early archaeological practice in Egypt, by pioneering Egyptologists.
