The Instructors

Andrew Feest, Duncan Fatz and Lyell Drummond are fully insured, qualified first aiders and certified Instructors through the (BFHS) British Federation of Historical Swordplay

Andrew Feest previous activities involved judo, gymnastics, swimming, football, modern ballet and tap dancing. Andrew graduated with a BA Honours in Theatre Design in Nottingham. His first involvement with European Martial arts was through medieval armoured tournament fighting utilising the broadsword, bastard sword, longsword and arming sword & shield. Andrew was a founder member of the Sussex Sword Academy (SRS as was) established in 1997. Andrew instructs mainly Longsword, Rapier, Rapier & Dagger and small sword (one to one). Andrew has been invited to teach in Italy by (FISAS) Italian Ancient & Historical Federation, Spain by (AEEA) Asociacion Espanola De Escrima Antigua, France by Escrime, Rapieres Et Fines Lames and Detroit ( ISMAC). Andrew has been invited by Brighton & Hove City Council, Brighton Royal Pavilion, The National Army Museum, Discovery Channel and Channel Four and the Field magazine to appear as an "expert" in European Martial Arts (WMA). He has also taken children's workshops in theatre and fencing and has been employed as a one to one instructor by actors and dancers to improve their fencing and "to look the part". At the end of 2005 Andrew was elected as the President of the British Federation of Historical Swordplay and served for three years. Andrew has been developing his skills as a sword maker and earns much of his living through his relationship with the sword.

Lyell DrummondLyell Drummond was one of the very early members of the Sussex Sword Academy. Before that he trained at the Brighton and Hove Fencing Club for many years (Coaches Roy and Angela Goodall). Lyell has developed a passion for Highland Broadsword and single stick and presents regular classes on Wednesday 7.30pm and one to ones on the Wednesday sessions. Lyell has been invited by FISAS to demonstrate and then teach at their international Event in 2011.

Duncan Fatz was a founder member of the Sussex Rapier Society, which later became the Sussex Sword Academy and has been involved in the practice of historical swordsmanship since 1993. Initially involved in medieval armoured combat his interests turned to the study and practice of rapier combat, with an especial interest in the earlier ‘transitional’ period. The focus of his study and practice is therefore sidesword and early rapier, although he also practices late rapier and has travelled extensively to investigate other martial art forms. Accredited by the BFHS as an instructor in 2001, Duncan has made a number of screen and television appearances including “King Arthur” and “Nathan Barley”.

SRS CHANGE OF NAME

The Sussex Rapier School has been practicing many sword forms for a number years now and it has been decided by the Instructors to rename the School The Sussex Sword Academy to reflect more clearly what the SRS has become. Due to the fact that the SRS is well know in the European Martial Arts community we will introduce this change over time until we feel the new name has become well and truly established.
