LATEST NEWS

On Sunday, 10th August, a number of participants gathered at the Dumfries Border Gathering to face each other for this events first Backsword Tournament.
3 SRS fencers attended.

There were 21 bouts with singlestick to determine a top 4, and then those 4 faced each other with steel blades to determine the top 3 and overall champion of the day.

Despite a constantly changing climate all day, the fencers braved the elements as well as each other, at times fencing regardless in torrential rain (welcome to Scotland!).

The final rounds with steel confirmed the top tournament places –

3rd place,
Robert Wrighton
, Sussex Rapier Society

2nd place,
Lyell Drummond
, Sussex Rapier Society

1st place,
Mike Smith
, Macdonald Academy of Arms.

SRS Method of Teaching

The SRS utilizes the concept of “Le Sale d'Arme”, specifically, the creation of a formal environment in which the discipline of the mind and body can be encouraged through the teaching of fencing.

The SRS follow the tradition of teaching the art and science of fencing according to the martial principles of the duel. We encourage our students to look at the study of fencing as a journey rather than a means to an end. This teaching has an emphasis on physical subtlety and mental stamina.

We teach Italian rapier techniques from the Transitional Rapier to its maturity represented by the Classical Rapier. (Spada da Latto to Spada da Latto a Stricia). At this stage of our development we mainly draw on Di Grassi, Capo Ferro and the teachings of Andrew Feest, Duncan Fatz and Maestro Lupo Sinclair.

The SRS attempt to discourage thuggery by avoiding ill informed sparring and sword slapping. We achieve this result through the refinement of the mind and through scholastic reasoning, egos are discouraged and must be kept out of the Salle. We actively encourage our students to visit other teachers to study other martial forms.

Instructors Andrew and Duncan, through regular travel and academic study, further refine and improve their own development and bring this back to the school, whilst maintaining the continuity of learning passed on to their students.
