On Sunday, 10th August, a number of participants gathered at the Dumfries Border Gathering to face each other for this events first Backsword Tournament.
3 SRS fencers attended.

There were 21 bouts with singlestick to determine a top 4, and then those 4 faced each other with steel blades to determine the top 3 and overall champion of the day.

Despite a constantly changing climate all day, the fencers braved the elements as well as each other, at times fencing regardless in torrential rain (welcome to Scotland!).

The final rounds with steel confirmed the top tournament places –

3rd place,
Robert Wrighton, Sussex Rapier Society

2nd place,
Lyell Drummond, Sussex Rapier Society

1st place,
Mike Smith, Macdonald Academy of Arms.

Venue for rapier and highland broadsword Classes

The Salle (gym) is at Brighton & Hove High School for Girls (Juniors). Radinden Manor Road (off Old Shoreham Road).

There are full changing facilities and showers. The gym will be open at 7.30pm on Monday and Wednesday and sessions will start at 7.45pm and finish at 9.20pm. It has to be vacated by 9.30pm prompt. There is on site parking inside the school grounds and the entrance is the first on the right arriving from Old Shoreham Road. Enter through the playground gate to gain access directly into the gym. There will be a caretaker on site.

Longsword Classes - Wednesday

The Salle (gym) is at Manor Road Gym in Manor Road, Kemp Town, Brighton BN2 5EA, .

There are full changing facilities. The Classes are on Wednesday and sessions will start at 8.00pm and finish at 10.00pm. There is on street parking. The venue is well signed and can be easily seen from Manor Road.
