His first involvement with European Martial arts was through medieval armoured tournament fighting utilising the broadsword, bastard sword, longsword and arming sword & shield. Andrew was a founder member of the Sussex Sword Academy (SRS as was) established in 1997. He instructs mainly Longsword, Rapier, Rapier & Dagger. Andrew has been invited to teach in Italy by (FISAS) Federazione Italiana Scherma Antica e Storica, in Spain by (AEEA) Asociacion Espanola De Escrima Antigua, in France by Escrime, Rapieres Et Fines Lames, in Detroit (ISMAC), at SWASH by the British Federation of Historical Swordplay and in Malta (MHFA) Historical Fencing Association.

He has also taken children's workshops in theatre and fencing and has been employed as a one to one instructor by actors and dancers to improve their fencing and "to look the part". At the end of 2005 Andrew was elected as the President of the British Federation of Historical Swordplay and served for three years. Andrew has been developing his skills as a sword maker and earns much of his living through his relationship with the sword.

Lyell DrummondLyell Drummond
Senior Instructor, Master of Highland Broadsword.

is the first (and only) member of the SSA to earn his position as Instructor. He has developed his own system of SSA Highland Basket Hilted Broadsword based on his academic studies, 15 years of fencing experience and exposure to many instructors of note from home and abroad. Lyell studied foil/epee/sabre under the Goodhalls. (Angela Goodhall is one of only two women coaching in the UK to hold the ancient title of 'Professor', which is the highest level of coaching qualification available). Lyell studied rapier with Andrew Feest (SSA) and now teaches his own classes in Basket Hilted Broadsword, Broadsword and Dirk, and Broadsword and Targe. Lyell was invited to teach at SWASH by the British Federation of Historical Swordplay in Italy by (FISAS) Federazione Italiana Scherma Antica e Storica, in Spain by (AEEA) Asociacion Espanola De Escrima Antigua, and in Malta (MHFA) Historical Fencing Association. Duncan Fatz
Senior Instructor

Founder member of the Sussex Rapier Society, which later became the Sussex Sword Academy and has been involved in the practice of historical swordsmanship since 1993. Initially involved in medieval armoured combat his interests turned to the study and practice of rapier combat, with an especial interest in the earlier ‘transitional’ period. The focus of his study and practice is therefore sidesword and early rapier, although he also practices late rapier and has travelled extensively to investigate other martial art forms. Accredited by the BFHS as an instructor in 2001, Duncan has made a number of screen and television appearances including “King Arthur” and “Nathan Barley".

Duncan Fatz has been invited by the Wallace Collection to write and provide practical seminars on the Art of Defence with Rapier and related weapons”.
